Our experts will design the each option for you and advice on which suits you best according to your budget.

On-grid Solar Power System
This is the most common type of Affordable solar power system in New Zealand. A grid-connected solar panel system is comprised of solar panels, an inverter, and connection components. Power is generated from solar panels during the day, appliances can freely use this energy. If appliances are turned off, solar power is sent to the grid, and sold to your energy retailer. Common residential grid-connected system sizes installed in New Zealand range between 3kW and 5kW.
System Requirements: Solar Panels, Grid-Tied Inverter, Energy Meter

Off-grid Solar Power System
An off-grid system is no longer connected to the grid. An off-grid system is fully independent, relies on solar panels, and batteries. Some customers choose to have a generator as a backup. This particular system is popular with rural solar power customers, and for those who aim to be 100% self-sufficient. System Requirements: – Solar Panels – Off-Grid inverter – Battery Storage – Backup generator (optional)
Hybrid Solar Power System
Similar to a grid-connected system. Solar storage batteries are added to reduce the amount of power being exported to the grid and allow solar power to be used in night-time hours. Certain battery configurations will also provide the use of stored solar power in a power outage or blackout.
System Requirements: – Solar Panels – Hybrid Inverter – Battery Storage – EPS Control Box – Energy Meter

Commercial Solar Power System
Any of the above system types can be fitted to commercial applications, whether it’s for a block of shops, a factory, office building, or a solar panel farm.

FAQs
The estimated amount of energy generated by solar would be indicated by our design team based on current energy consumption. The design process includes recommending the optimum solar system size that would be compatible with the roof space, meeting export requirements and desired savings.
The generation of your solar system will depend on the individual system specified. This will also be heavily influenced by environmental and physical factors such as your home’s location, orientation, and any impact of shading from trees and neighbouring physical features.
An accurate assessment and projected output will be completed by one of our solar designers to specify the optimal solution for your home.
The primary components are:
- Panels
- Inverter
- Smart meter
- Battery (Optional)
- EV charger (Optional)
- Mounting system
- Rails
- Mounting kit for each roof type
- Cables
- Conduits
- Isolators
- Optimisers for shading (depending on obstruction)
To accurately select the right product and pricing, we will need to know the material of your roof.
Some roofs have asbestos, and we are unable to install solar on those roofs. As a broad rule, decramastic roofs (see description below), installed before 1990 will have asbestos. If you are unsure as to what your roof is made of, or how old it is, we can check this in the in-home assessment. Roofing is typically made up of:
- Tiles (traditionally terracotta or slate, may also be modern materials such as concrete, metal and plastic)
- Decramastic Roof (typically bitumen or mastic-based pressed metal tiles, scallop-shaped, and had a stone chip coating)
- Shingles roof (flat, rectangular pieces of timber, asphalt, composite, or other roofing material)
- Colour steel / Metal Roof (typically metal panels)
If you have additional power that you cannot store, you will be able to export power back to the grid. In residential installations under the Regulatory Standards (AS/NZS 4777.1) you can export a maximum of 5KW/Phase. Your electricity retailer will then provide an export feed in tariff, which is applied as a credit on your power bill. The rates provided do vary between retailers and can be an important part of your selection criteria
Yes, if you would like to upgrade the system with individual components in the future, we can assist with this. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
No, a solar only system will shut down automatically. However, if the system has a battery (optional extra), this will provide a backup for a limited amount of time in the case of power outages occurring.
Systems with a hybrid inverter and battery installation can continue to generate electricity during a power cut. That electricity will power selected circuits in your home and charge the battery.
A standard step in our process is the completion of an IHA (In Home Assessment). This detailed site assessment enables us to check for obstructions, shading, health and safety and access points. This enables us to provide a final system price which is then treated as the final quotation to be signed off by all parties before installation.
The combination of Australian safety standard, CEC compliant batteries, high-quality enclosures, and installations being performed by professional qualified installers, means that home battery systems are a safe choice for your home.

Note: all NZ batteries have been approved using the Australian safety standard
We offer a range of batteries in various capacities with modular increments which are sized to suit your requirements. Typically these have a range of 5-40kWh depending on the chosen system. Charge and discharge rates as well as usable capacity (DOD) depend on the individual product and can be discussed during the selection process.
We request power bills or monthly consumption data from you and calculate estimated returns using our internal design tool. This indicates which system size would suit your consumption and calculates your monthly and yearly potential savings. It also shows the price comparison between the grid tied hybrid system and your powerline and solar tariffs. The savings are based on the accumulated offset of draw from the grid and are to be seen as estimates only. These savings may change due to tariff increases from your retailer, or with changes in consumption profile and volume.
Solar energy has an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Solar energy can also improve air quality and reduce water use from energy production. While equipment does have some embodied carbon from the manufacturing process, the operation of a solar PV system does not create emissions. In New Zealand, it is estimated that by powering your home with a 5KW system, you can save approximately 0.8 tonne of C02 annually.
Source: https://www.energy.gov/eere/solar/solar-energy-wildlife-and-environment
0.8 tonne of C02 is equal to:
- Emissions produced from driving 4,678km in an average New Zealand vehicle
1 tonne of C02 looks like:
- 500 C02 fire extinguishers
- a 500 m3 hot air balloon
- 125m3 of cola
For the capture of 1 tonne of C02 emissions in New Zealand:
- 50 trees must grow for one year
You may need to clean your panels from time to time depending on weather and environmental conditions. When cleaning is required, a soft bristle brush and water is the recommended solution.
Following installation of your system, we will advise you when the system can be turned on. Under NZ electrical regulations the system must be inspected and have a Record of Inspection provided before this can legally be livened. In addition, in most instances your electricity meter will need to be changed and turning your system on prior to this change may mean you incur additional charges. If used ahead of confirmation from Fisher & Paykel, you will be responsible for any loss, damage or injury caused by use prior to such confirmation.
There can be a safety risk in using the system before it is confirmed operational. Do not use the system until we have confirmed it is operational.
Contact Fisher & Paykel Home Solutions through Customer Care, by calling 0800 647 841 or emailing homesolutions.supportnz@fisherpaykel.com for all issues with your solar solution. We will be able to troubleshoot and organise a technician, as required.
We also note that the products each come with different product warranties provided by the respective manufacturer.
