What is a hot water heat pump?
Hot water heat pumps are a highly efficient alternative to traditional electric or gas hot water cylinders. They work on the same principle as other heat pumps: instead of generating heat directly, they extract it from the ambient air, using only a small amount of electricity to run. This can reduce power use for water heating by up to 80%. Considering that hot water makes up around 30% of the average Kiwi home’s power bill, the savings can really add up.
Why choose a hot water heat pump?
First off, efficiency. Hot water heat pumps are way more efficient than old-fashioned hot water cylinders, so you can expect to save money on your power bill.
Next, they’re good for the planet. Everything we can do to reduce household energy use means less needs to be generated. Even in New Zealand, a big part of our electricity generation comes from fossil fuels, so less is better!
Finally, think about home resale time. Imagine choosing between two homes, one with an old-fashioned hot water cylinder and the other with one that uses 70-79% less electricity. Which one would you choose?
